The decision by a 25-year- old graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Nazir Nortei Alema, to join the dreaded terrorist organization, Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), has left his family in a state of distress.
The family is unable to fathom how their son a very quiet and calm person would make such a shocking decision to join an extremist and ruthless group whose deeds that does not sit right with Islamic tenets.
Nazir Nortei Alema, who graduated with a degree in Geography and Rural Development, started his fateful trip to the training grounds of the so-called Islamic State, on 2nd August 2015, soon after his completion of the mandatory National Service in Ghana, which he undertook at the Statistical Service.
He reportedly sent a WhatsApp message to the family indicating that he was on his way to Prestea from where he would proceed to Takoradi on an official assignment.
He later sent another message indicating that he had lied to the family and that the truth was that he was on his way to join the ISIS.
In an interview with Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM Tuesday, Nazir Nortei Alema’s father and brother, Abdul Latif Alema and Kabir respectively, who sounded very troubled by the event stated that they are stunned by Nazir’s exit.
They noted that his departure has left the family having to go through a harrowing experience since they do not know what his state of life is currently, and what he may be up to now.
The family has reportedly informed a top official of the National Security Council who has assured to get the matter investigated.
